I LOVE capturing engagement sessions at the beach, especially during the late summer or early fall months. There’s just something about the warm, golden sunlight, the soft sand beneath your feet, and the calm waves that make everything feel so romantic and timeless. But here’s a little secret: July? Eh, not so much.

Sure, summer is the ideal time for a beach engagement session, but I’ve learned over the years that mid/late June, August, and early to mid-September are the absolute best months. Trust me, these months offer the perfect balance of gorgeous weather, lower humidity, and less crowded beaches. So, let’s chat about why these months are ideal and how to make the most out of your beach engagement session!

Why Summer is the Perfect Time for a Beach Engagement

Let’s start with the weather! In Massachusetts, we all know how hot and sticky July can get. The humidity is through the roof, and the last thing you want during an engagement shoot is to be dripping sweat, trying to look cute on a beach. By mid/late June, the weather is warm but not stifling, and the sunsets? They’re to die for! In August, the sun’s still shining bright, and early September is simply stunning, especially as the summer crowds begin to thin out.

These months offer that perfect beachy vibe without feeling like you’re roasting alive or battling for space with crowds of tourists. Trust me, mid/late June, August, and September are total game-changers when it comes to the best beach engagement photos!

What to Wear for Your Beach Engagement Session

Now, let’s talk about outfits! First off, neutral colors are a MUST for a beach engagement session! I cannot stress this enough. Think soft, airy tones like whites, creams, light blush, muted greens, and soft blues. These colors blend beautifully with the natural beach surroundings and won’t compete with the scenery. I LOVE how Meagan and Patrick’s outfits worked so perfectly for their session. Their neutral colors not only complemented the backdrop, but also gave the photos a timeless, soft feel. Simple and elegant, with no bold patterns to distract from the natural beauty around them.

When picking outfits, you want to think about comfort and movement. The beach is all about flowing, playful moments, dancing, twirling, piggyback rides, and just having fun with your partner. So, pick something that lets you move freely! I always recommend having at least two outfits: one that’s a bit dressy (maybe a flowy dress for the bride-to-be!) and one that’s more casual. Think shorts, pants, or jeans, nothing too formal since the beach setting is more laid-back. The best thing? You can mix and match! A cute flowy dress for the first look and then something a little more relaxed for the second half of the shoot. Plus, two outfits make for more variety in your photos!

And for my couples looking for that extra little touch, don’t forget shoes! Be mindful of the fact that you’ll be walking through sand, so leave those high heels behind (unless you’re up for a little beach walk challenge!). Flip-flops, barefoot, or simple sandals work wonders!

Some of My Favorite Beach Engagement Locations in Massachusetts

When it comes to finding the perfect beach for your engagement photos, Massachusetts is home to some gems! Here are some of my favorite beaches to shoot at:

  • Old Silver Beach, Falmouth, Cape Cod, MA – A total classic! Old Silver Beach has the perfect balance of soft sand, clear water, and beautiful sunsets. It’s one of those beaches where you’ll fall in love all over again.
  • The Knob, Falmouth, Cape Cod, MA – Looking for a more secluded spot? The Knob offers panoramic views of the ocean with a mix of woodland and beach vibes. It’s super intimate and ideal for those who want a more peaceful, private session.
  • Duxbury Beach, Duxbury, MA – This beach is a little busier but equally stunning! Duxbury Beach has tons of space and offers some amazing opportunities for unique shots with the tidal flats and scenic coastline.
  • Rexhame Beach, Marshfield, MA – If you’re looking for a more low-key, laid-back spot, Rexhame Beach is perfect. You can get cozy, candid shots while enjoying the natural beauty of the coastline.
  • Plymouth Beach, Plymouth, MA – Another classic! Plymouth Beach is perfect for couples who want a mix of sandy shores and rocky landscapes. The iconic Mayflower can even be seen in the distance!
  • Mayflower Beach, Dennis, Cape Cod, MA – The ultimate sunset spot! The sand is soft, and the views are simply unbeatable. It’s the perfect setting for romantic, peaceful engagement photos.

Each of these beaches has something unique to offer, and I can’t wait to show you all the magical spots where we can create some incredible memories!

Pro Tip for Your Beach Engagement Session: Plan Your Timing!

Timing is everything, especially for a beach engagement session. The best light for photos? The golden hour, of course! That soft, warm glow right before sunset creates the most beautiful lighting for your photos. But, be sure to plan your session around the timing of the sunset to ensure we capture that perfect moment!

Also, keep in mind that tides can change the landscape of the beach, so be sure to check the tide charts when we plan your session. The tide will affect where we can shoot, so we’ll want to time everything perfectly!
